Rose Mary states, “‘It’s the Joshua tree’s struggle that gives it its beauty.’” This quote tells us that Rose Mary believes in the importance of letting your child be independent and work towards their goals, not a parent’s image of their perfect child. The reader learns from this quote that Jeannette’s mom thinks that someone’s strive to grow, is what gives it strength and “beauty”. Rose Mary, as a mother, thinks that by letting her children grow up, as a tree does, to be themselves, without her pushing them straight (what Jeannette wished to do for the Joshua tree) will bring her children confidence, that they can make it on their own.
