In 1945 the U.S had declared war on Japan after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. America had to find the perfect place,strategy, time to attack back. Air and Naval attacks were ruled out of the decision.American generals wanted to attack something that would make it very difficult for Japan to defend themselves.They have found the perfect place,Iwo Jima.Iwo Jima is a small island located in the Pacific, 750 miles south of Tokyo, Japan. It is 4.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. The word Iwo is Japanese for sulfur. In fact, the majority of the island is most definitely made up of sulfur.
