Four years ago, my perspective on life and decision making changed forever when I joined the JROTC program. I came into high school thinking everything would be easy and at the palms of my hands, but that wasn’t the case. Little did I know, I had the upper hand over the rest of my peers. Colonel Crites made sure my schedule was right, I was treated right, and that I made the right decisions for myself. I went into the program with an older brother that didn’t guide me, but set standards for me. Through-out my entire high school career, I have experienced, contributed, and committed my time in various activities that have impacted me well. I was challenged mentally through academics, physically through summer camp, and over-all by staying in the program all four years. I know I am scholarship worthy through the volunteering I have contributed to, how reliable I make myself, and how committed I have been to the JROTC program. …show more content…
Over the past three years, I have volunteered for the Purple Heart veterans of Kingsville and the Veterans of Foreign War. We collected donations outside of Walmart to support our veterans who may have a hard time. This opened my eyes to the injured veterans and how the service has affected their lives. This has impacted the way I appreciate school because not all of the veterans had an opportunity to get a formal education. At the time, the military was their only future. I come back every year to support them, and now I love volunteering often. This encouraged me to volunteer at the American Legion’s plate sale with my fellow cadets. To my surprise, I slowly gained leadership experience with the help of these events. I would have never received this opportunity if I had not contributed my time and effort into this JROTC program.
