When Buck arrives in the North, he can’t believe how cruelly the animals are treated and how they treat each other. Buck becomes the property of Francois and Perrault, but over the time Buck starts a rivalry with the lead dog of the pack Spitz. Spitz is very defensive of his role as the lead dog and when Buck starts to slowly take his role as the lead of the team, Buck and Spitz have a major fight that is ended with Buck killing Spitz, and Buck becoming the lead dog. Buck and his team of dogs are eventually sold to a group of American gold hunters, Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. Buck’s new owners don’t know a lot about the wilderness and abuse the dogs. Buck is beaten by Charles when a man named John Thornton saved him. Buck’s new master becomes John Thornton. Buck becomes highly loyal to Thornton. Over time, Buck gets more and more attached to the wild. Once, he went off into the wild and when he came back to find that Yeehat Indians had killed his master. Buck left his home and lived in the
