The Rookie of the Year award became a national honor in 1947, but it wasn’t a national honor until Jackie Robison won it. One award was presented for both leagues in 1947 and 1948. The award was renamed the Jackie Robinson Award in 1987. Robinson began playing in negro leagues, but he was chosen by Branch Rickey, President of the Brooklyn Dodgers, to help break the color barrier in major league baseball.
