Barriers, they get in our way and we have a hard time getting past them. Barriers are material or even immaterial things separating two things. For example, depression holds you back from doing things because it makes you feel like you don’t have energy. Anxiety is another barrier people face. It keeps them from trying new things.

I have Chiari Malformation, this is my barrier. Chiari is a condition where the skull is misshapen or abnormally small, which presses the cerebellum tonsils downward into the spinal canal. I have had this my whole life. There is no cure for it so I have to deal with it for the rest of my life. Chiari gives me a lot of trouble. It gives me neck pain, horrible headaches and migraines that feel like someone drove over my head with a steam roller. It gives me bad hand coordination which makes it hard at school and it makes my hands and feet feel tingly and numb almost all the time. I get dizzy even when i do nothing to cause it and have

Like everyone else, it’s bound to happen. Robinson had a lifelong barrier just like me. His race wa a barrier. It kept him from playing with caucasians. My condition keeps me from playing sports all together. He had many values to get past his barrier such as citizenship, excellence, integrity, justice, commitment, courage, persistence, and teamwork.

I have values of my own to get past my barrier as much as I can. One of them being determination. I use determination to stay focused on taking care of myself and staying on schedule for appointments so it won’t get worse. Determination gives me the strength to get up everyday and work as hard as I can regardless of my condition.

Another value I have is courage. I use courage to be brave so I can get over my fear of needles. Courage helps me push through the day and get up and do things I usually wouldn’t do because I was too scared before. Even if i’m scared, courage has helped me get through it and accomplish
