Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play Major League Baseball. He also broke the color barrier. Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 of that sport that had been segregated for almost 50 years. The word color barrier means unspoken social code of racial segregation or discrimination. He was only 28 years old when he played his first game for the Dodgers and broke the color barrier. He won the World Series in 1955, he was named MLB Rookie of the Year in 1947. Robinson stood up for equal rights even before he started playing baseball. Jackie joined the dodgers on April l5, 1947. In 1999, 50 year after Robinson played baseball, the number 42 was officially retired from every Major League Baseball team. One of his quotes are “I'm
