It seems that while striving to attain success in life there comes many obstacles. In my life I have encountered obstacles developed by myself or by an external force. However, I have also been able to extract lessons from the impediments that I have faced, using them to advance me in my own path towards excellence. One hindrance I overcame was the fear of failure. Last year, I competed in three elections in a row and lost all of them which resulted in me feeling discouraged from ever holding a leadership position. However, I was able to use the lessons I acquired from this failure to my advantage. From this experience I realized that stepping out of your comfort zone does not mean stepping into a different personality. Many times I am the only minority in one of my AP classes which has resulted in my peers often believing that individuals of color are not as qualified or competent enough to handle advanced class material. Even with this being so, I did not let it prevent me from taking AP classes; instead, I used it as another reason to succeed in those classes, so that I could disprove my peers. Jackie Robinson most likely also experienced this in his lifetime. Mr. Robinson began his fight for civil rights while serving in the armed forces for he would not acquiesce when he was mistreated because of the color of his skin. He also joined the all-white Brooklyn Dodgers to initiate the desegregation of Major League Baseball. From Jackie Robinson's’ life young people can realize how to exemplify bravery like Jackie exhibited as he paved a way for the proper treatment of African Americans. Additionally, young people can also take away the quality of perseverance which Mr. Robinson had to have after months passed and he was still mistreated on the field and in the force because of the color of his
