Some might call him, “A legend!” Others might say he played to show that blacks are humans, too. Whatever the reasoning, he was a heroic character in life. He started in a small town of blacks, living in poverty. He kept his head up and was the star of his school. From there he went on to be a professional baseball player and break the worldwide color barrier for athletes. Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in the small town of Cairo, Georgia. Raised in the time of segregation and poverty, he was so very unaware of what life had in store for him. Being the youngest of all five children was not always easy for Jackie. “Life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives,” Robinson said fairly often. Jackie has changed the way athletes and people of different races think of each other. He taught us how to get through the rough times, that school sports can go a long way, and that professional sports are not all about the fame and fortune. He died in Connecticut on October 24, 1972. The great Robinson died from Myocardial infarction, or a sudden heart attack. Though he is gone now, the legend still lives on in athletes lives today!
