Simon’s death is a result of the beast, the fear in which captivated the minds and behavior of the boys, their craving for blood, and their foolish games about the beast. After the boys had viciously stabbed at Simon, they were left stunned, “There were no words, and movements but the tearing of teeth and claws” (175). The group is no longer the innocent boys they were before, they are beasts in the night who dance around like their fire and fight with their teeth and claws. As the boys chanted and danced together Jack pushed them to continue, “Jack leapt on the sand. ‘Do our dance! Come on! Dance!’...The movement became regular while the chant lost its first superficial excitement and began to beat like a steady pulse” (174). Jacks persuasion
