Jacksonian Democrats viewed themselves as the guardians of the United States Constitution, political democracy, individual liberty, and equality of economic opportunity however, they disobeyed the supreme court, did not protect political democracy or individual liberty for non-white men but did protect economic opportunity.

Jacksonian Democrats went against the supreme court on matters that were said to be constitutional. For example, the Trail of Tears happened after the Indian Removal Act was passed. The Indian Removal Act, passed in 1830, allowed negotiations to occur between president Jackson and southern Indian tribes about their removal. In 1839, the Cherokee nation was forced to give up their lands east of the Mississippi under Andrew
