Jacob Kouts (7/4/1842-8/9/1921) buried Sunnyside Cemetery. Jacob Kouts was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on a patriotic day---July 4, 1842. He was 19 years old and living in St. Cloud, Minnesota, when the Civil War began. He was mustered into Company D on May 20, 1861, and was promoted to the rank of corporal on February 11, 1863. He was shot near his right elbow on July 2, 1863, during the regiment's charge at Gettysburg. The bullet just missed his elbow joint. It then traveled up his arm about three inches. He and many of the other wounded men from the First Minnesota were sent to Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia to recover. He returned to duty on October 20, 1863, in time to take part in the actions around Mine Run. However, it was found that he was not able to handle a gun well enough to fight. Sawyer on June 1, 1866. Five years later, on June 23, 1871, they were divorced. On October 3, 1871, Jacob married Margaret C. Davis in Logansport, Indiana. They had three children, Thomas (b. 1/20/1873) and Leroy (b. 12/6/1875). A daughter, born in 1877, died when she was two years old. In 1888, the family moved to Ontario, California, where he made a living working as a carpenter. Jacob's arm never recovered from the injury he suffered at Gettysburg. He was bothered by the wound for the rest of his life. In 1873, he received a benefit of $2 a month for his disability. However, his wound grew worse over time. On November 1, 1896, in order to save his life, his arm was amputated 6 inches above his elbow. Being right handed, he was unable to do much work after that. Around 1915 the family moved to Long Beach. Margaret Davis Kouts (5/1843-4/26/1918) died before Jacob, on August 12, 1921, the 79-year-old Civil War veteran was buried next to
