Lura Hines’ brother ran her over with a truck at the age of two. Jacob Salmon, the oldest of seven children, was left an orphan after the death of his parents in 1870. William the Conqueror took part in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, yet lived to tell the tale to his future children. Somehow, during all of the confusion and chaos that occurred throughout the history of the Salmon family, the Salmon name was able to live on for many generations. If it were not for the remarkable chain of events that occurred in the past, there would not have been a present or future. Diving into the past and learning about the Salmon family history brings up a riveting path of discovery. The furthest traceable branch of the Salmon family tree goes all the way back to 742 AD when Charlemagne, the 35th great grandfather of the youngest born Salmon to date, was born. Charlegmagne, also known as Charles the Great, was the medieval emperor of Western Europe. He is said to have had eighteen children, which explains how he became the great grandfather of many, even someone who lived thousands of years after him. It is said that Jacob Salmon, who would be the 3rd great grandfather of the youngest Salmon to date, was half cherokee. Through research, it was never determined whether this is true or not. Either way, it is apparent there there is at least a fraction of Indian blood in the family from someone down the line. It was surprising to find that Jacob was a Revolutionary soldier and at battle, he lost 5 of his fellow soldiers, but was lucky enough to live through the battle. Jacob only had one son, whose name is documented as John Salmons. It is unknown where the extra s came in, because he is the only one recorded with the extra letter.
