James and Angye Bomgaars both regret the perspective they had on their early adult life. They both viewed others opinions to be hatred towards them and that nobody understood and was there for them. James changes his view towards his religion by talking to his mom about the color of God, going to the synagogue, and the Jewish wedding. Over time he changed from a young Jewish boy to a young adult Christian. James over time realized that there were people there to help him and that he didn’t have to grow up the same way his mother did. At the beginning of the book James questions his mom often about her past and childhood and she doesnt ever want to really talk about it because she doesn’t want him to grow up how she did. When James asks her is God black her response was “Oh boy… God’s not black. He’s not white. He’s a spirit. Does he like black or white people better? He loves all people. He’s a spirit. What’s a spirit? A spirit’s a spirit. What color is God’s spirit? It doesn’t have a color, she said God is the color of water. Water doesn’t have a color.” (51). James decided he wanted to go find out about her past by going on a trip by himself to where his mom was from originally. While on this trip James goes to the synagogue where his biological father was a teacher. “Ma was so hurt she resolved never to go back there again.” (253). She says this about the synagogue because when her husband was there the synagogue was the best it had ever been. When he passed away the synagogue went downhill very fast. When they came back to the synagogue they took all of Dennis’s stuff down off the walls and changed the place up a lot ever since he passed away.
