Ever felt empty inside? As in you're missing something you know you have always needed but never received? It's as if you're the only crab without a shell inside the crab tank, just longing to find your purpose. Or put it this way, what if you were a man that once had it good until it all went bad and you never got back on your feet? In the song "Can I Be Him", James Arthur expresses how he has a crush on a woman and feels whole inside when he hears her sing. While he listens and watches her, he yearns to be the guy she's singing about. Furthermore, in "Can I Be Him", James Arthur is showing his hope, vulnerability, and jealousy when it comes to the possibility of love.

According to the first verse and chorus of James Arthur's song, he seems to experience love at first sight. As a fan of James Arthur, the setting of the song feels as if it's at a night club or open mic event. When he says "you walked into the room and now my heart has been stolen...", it's inferred that he is …show more content…
For example, when he talks about how he's heard she is involved with someone but doesn't think he deserves her. He shows how he envies their close relations and wants to be in his position. When James Arthur says "If you were mine, I'd never let anyone hurt you...", it sets the tone of him being a bit jealous of her boyfriend. It's almost like anything her boyfriend does, he will never see it to be good enough if he's not the one doing it for her. When he says "I wanna dry those tears, kiss those lips, it's all I've been thinking about...", you can infer that James Arthur just wants to cater to his crush so she can see what kind of man he can be to her.
