In James Baldwin's A Stranger in the Village, he explains his experience in a small town in Switzerland. The way the people of the little village, from an outsider's point of view, was not that astonishing. It would make sense that the little town had never seen a black man, and they had no idea how to react. Although Baldwin was obviously upset by the way they treated him he handled it very well. Another part that is surprising but understandable is the donation box. The people of the little village honestly believed they were helping people from a poor country. There obviously was a lot of racism in the village behind closed doors. The village people thought of the black man as the devil and blamed him for things happening in the village.
