James Henderson Berry was born May 15, 1841. He was born in Jackson County, Alabama but moved to Arkansas with his family in 1848 when he was a child. They moved to Carroll County. His parents names were James M. and Isabelle Berry and they had ten children. They were farmers and owned a store. James went to Berryville Academy as an adult. Berry married Elizabeth Quaile in 1865 and had four children. Berry had a very positive and productive life serving in the Army, was an attorney, teacher, legislator, judge, Senator, and Governor.
In 1861, James went into the military as a confederate in the Army. A confederate member was a part of a nation of eleven states. He was a second lieutenant in the Army with the Arkansas Infantry. Berry was a prisoner of war and was taken by the Union Army. He then was captured again while in the hospital but was able to go home. He was wounded in the war and lost his leg and became disabled. The last battle he fought and lost his leg in was the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. He didn’t give up on becoming something and making something with his life. He went on to teach and become a lawyer.

The Arkansas House of Representatives consist of the legislative branch of government in Arkansas. In the same year he became a lawyer by passing the bar exam in Arkansas. He also was reelected in 1872 and 1874 where he served as the speaker. Berry had his own law practice. He practiced with his brother-in-law in their own firm. Berry moved to Bentonville in 1869 and became the chairman of the Democratic State convention in 1882. During this time period was still practicing law. He also then served as a judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court and served as a judge until
