James M.McPherson’s book “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief,” he shows how Lincoln became a successful commander and chief. Lincoln made himself a military strategist by studying the art of war. (3) Lincoln would read books and try to enter into conversations from people who understood military strategy. He would also look over military reports in order to understand why certain military strategies work and didn’t work. Lincoln was also not afraid to ask questions in order to better understand military strategy. This allowed Lincoln to be a successful leader because Americans were able to trust him when it came to military war strategy. Lincoln also trusted his fellow peers when they said that this strategy or tactic would be better than the one he proposed. Many families found this to be a difficult time for them because many sons and husbands went off to fight in the war. However, the peoples trust in Lincoln allowed for things to run more smoothly. Building trust was one of the key strategies Lincoln used in order to become a successful leader.
Lincoln was one of the most aware of what was going on in his army because he thought it was his responsibility. (120) Lincoln was right.
