In 1606, James I directed the London Company to establish the first English colony in North America. The expedition quickly settled on Virginia’s coastal territory and founded the Jamestown colony. The first attempt at permanent English settlement in the New World took time to develop, and didn’t profit for at least 20 years (Brinkley 38). However, Britain was not to be discouraged and formed twelve more major colonies in on the North American Coast from 1626 to 1732. The New England, Middle and Southern colonists experienced vastly different conditions, not only in disparity of terrain, but also religious and social environments deviated from one another.
