Long before what we now call America, there was nothing but unequipped pilgrims coming from Europe, and Native Americans. They faced many challenges, including injurious climates, diseases that attacked their incognizant immune systems, and Natives who were ready to fight for what was rightfully theirs. Among these colonies two stand out, and while they share a few similarities both are profusely different; Jamestown and Plymouth.
The Jamestown colonist settled in Virginia. The colony had started off terribly. They suffered from famine, they would lay around in their own filth, they were attacked by diseases, and all of this was caused by poor leadership. Captain John Smith was appointed President, he had already been a council member. Now Smith had been in the military, but his personality was very cocky, or self absorbed, “...but procured his own liberty and got himself and his company such estimation amongst them, that those savages admired him.”(Smith 74). With Smith’s military skills the colony would flourish. As jobs were assigned and skills were learned the unexpected happened, the Natives had managed to capture Captain John Smith, which he referred to as savages. Smith gave the Natives a compass during this encounter. During a short meeting, (two hours), between the Natives. They had decided to get rid of Smith. The Natives held him down, and another grabbed a rock to beat Smiths brains out. Before anything could happen to Smith, Pocahontas dived to cover his head with her body. Smith was nothing but grateful towards her. The Natives released Smith back to Jamestown. Jamestown continued to progress under Smith’s influence. That was until he was forced to leave to seek medical attention in England due to a gunshot
