In Jane Eyre and The Picture of Dorian Grey, the characters appearances are one of the most important aspects of the stories but in very different ways. Jane is a very simple “plain jane” type of girl due to her lack of wealth. She is not known for her beauty and she allows for her plainness give her the boost she needs to be an independant woman at a time when such women did not exist. On the other hand, Dorian Grey allows his appearance to take over his life. He is told how beautiful he is and he envies his portrait because it will not age as he will. Dorian does not believe that his beauty will ever be enough and is willing to sell his soul in order to never age and this causes him to become a monster who could never love others because
