Janie began to find herself and her happiness in her first few years with Mr. Stark. Jody was pressed to move to a nearby city called Eatonville. Janie is now right behind him because of her decision to leave Logan for him. When Janie and Jody arrive to Eatonville, there is practically nothing. Jody is very upset and confused, Eatonville was supposed to be the city to live in; somewhere to build a good life. Since there is no Eatonville, or at least not what Jody expects, he takes the initiative to begin to rebuild the city. At this point Janie believes she has found the man of her dreams and is very content with her decision in leaving Logan.

For some, being behind the curtains when you deserve a starring role is fine. But for others this is not something they are satisfied with. Only a woman can do a lot of the things that women do. Bare a child for 9 months, emotionally support a broken family and successfully mend them back together. Things like planning and organization are all traits that can be taught but only women have the power to merge these valuable traits into their daily routines and lives. In chapter 7 of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Joe and Janie get into a heated argument. Throughout the course of their relationship Janie made Reference to his age. Jody would always fire back and say things like Janie wasn’t good for anything except work and sex. One day Janie had enough, she put her foot down and insulted his manhood publically. This resulted in Jody striking Janie so hard it seemed as if lightning had hit her. The townspeople were all around and a deep gasp came from each and every one of them. This was another turning point in Janie’s life, forcing her to separate herself from the whole town and isolating herself from Jody. The next two years were pretty hard for their marriage. Jody soon dies after their 20th anniversary, this is in the 8th chapter of the novel. Although Janie eventually found out the Jody was a terrible person she was still hurt after his death because she was still in love with the Jody Stark that first met, the Jody Stark that the delivered her from an absolutely boring and neglecting
