Janie Character Analysis Essay

The way Janie evolves as a character is truly astonishing. Throughout the book Janie grows in incredible ways. She is first presented in the book as a foolish and childish girl who is determined to find love. Janie is a completely different person at the end of the book because of what she has experienced throughout her life. Each of her husbands exposed her to his version of love. Janie forms a complex character when her appearance, actions, and beliefs are analyzed.
Janie is constantly complimented on her appearance. She has heavy long black hair, a light skin complexion, and is young-looking. Nearly everyone that crosses her path describes her as beautiful. Janie is introduced to us at her oldest age in the first few pages of the book …show more content…
Janie said “She knew God.” (Hurston 25) During her marriage to him she says, “It was one of those statements that everybody says but nobody actually believes like ‘God is everywhere.’”(Hurston 48). Janie finds her way back to God when she marries Tea Cake. She puts her trust back into him. During the hurricane she looks to God for answers, safety, salvation, and to thank him. “Six eyes were questioning God.” (Hurston 159). “I was fumblin’ round and God opened de door.” (Hurston 159). “Their eyes were watching God.” (Hurston 160) “They got tuh go tuh God.” (Hurston 192) She seems content with her spirituality.
In summation, Janie is complex and grew on her journey to find love. She is an attractive passive people pleaser who strayed from and questioned her God, but eventually found her way back to him. The best way to describe what happened to Janie on her journey is that she grew up. Reality challenged her dream and it is wha. She seemed satisfied with her life at the end of the end of the book; like she had found what she looking for. Janie was ever-changing throughout the book.
