Jay Gatsby, the young, rich gentleman in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, pursues his dream of becoming rich and powerful, even if he has to break the law to do it. His most prominent personality trait is his capacity for hope. Gatsby has a complexity of a great person; like all people, he has good and bad sides. Jay Gatsby is not born in a wealthy family; therefore, he has a dream and is very ambitious about becoming rich. Nick explains how Gatsby first meet Dan Cody: “It was James Gatz who had been loafing along the beach that afternoon in a torn green jersey and a pair of canvas pants” (Fitzgerald 98). At the young age, Gatsby works hard to fill his dream by doing anything he can. Gatsby dreams about being rich, and he works to make it come true. To make sure he reaches his goal, Gatsby makes his own personal schedule. His fate comes, and then he meets the wealthy man, Dan Cody, who allows Gatsby to work on his yacht and become his personal assistant. When Cody passes away, the money he leaves his money in Gatsby’s. Cody gives a chance for Gatsby to change his life into a brighter chapter.
