Jayden, a 15-year-old girl, is the antihero of our story. She is sassy, artistic, violent, and disrespectful, but also has a very dark upbringing. Her mother died at a young age and her father abuses her sexually and physically. This is what causes her to act out and be disrespectful. Her actions have caused her to move in and out of group homes. Her traits are reflective of the orange color in the Matrix System True Colors Personality Test. Orange type personalities are described as wild, reactive, and creative. Her personality is also reflective of the blue color. Since Jayden has gone through many traumatic experiences, she is very emotional and sensitive. At every turn, Jayden always comes up with a witty, sarcastic, and brazen thing to say. Her sassiness is more prominent in the beginning of the story because she does not respect or care about anyone at Short Term 12, but she still always feels the need to insert her smartass comments into every situation. This can be seen when she first arrives at Short Term 12. Grace is looking through her bag for contraband items like razors, rope, et al. When Grace confiscates a pair of scissors from her, Jayden remarks, “ Mmm, all the cool people use it to attempt suicide, but I just, you know, cut paper… kinda boring” (Cretton 16). Even though Grace is doing this to ensure the safety of everyone at Short Term 12, Jayden still feels the need to put her two-cents in and mock Grace’s actions.
