Jeannette Walls writes The Glass Castle and connect with audiences across the United States. There are two types of audiences for this piece of literature. The first one being people who grew up in the situation she did or teenagers dealing with that circumstance now. Her dad did different techniques of teaching in different situations,‘“It was like that time I threw you into the sulfur spring to teach you to swim,’ he said. ‘You might have been convinced you were going to drown, but I knew you'd do just fine’” (Walls 213). Many people in the situation that Jeannette was in may agree with her dad because they had to fend for themselves or else they would have drowned or potentially died not trying. She grew up with saying, “We might enroll in school, but not always. Mom and Dad did most of our teaching” (20). People reading this book might be surprised that the Walls kids do not get their education from a public school or get home schooled by government rules. The Walls family lives out of society in many ways and people who grew up wealthy might understand that you are not always given a “good” education from the government to grow up well in the world. She was always scared of judgment by thinking, “I was convinced that if all these people found out about Mom and Dad and who I really was, it would be impossible for me to keep my job. So I avoided discussing my parents. When that was impossible, I lied” (270). Jeannette wanted to keep her past hidden from others because she did not want to be treated like that, she wanted to fit in and her mother was always trying to be different. She felt ashamed and she wanted privileged people who did not experience that to know how she felt. Overall, there are two main types of audience that Jeannette Walls is trying to
