In the song written by Jeff Williams, “Sacrifice,” the speaker is portrayed as a defiant adolescent who refuses to conform to the will of an older power figure; it attacks the person in power by openly criticizing their methods to achieve an unreachable “goal” (38). Characterized by a series of metaphors, an overall motif of death and heavenly power, symbolism, a shift in tone, and a rhetorical question, this song expresses the theme that sacrifices can be made when an individual is not living their life for themselves. Furthermore, the speaker continues by proclaiming that the truth will be “revealed by mirrored eyes,” and the speaker uses such word choice because mirrors are reflective and parallel; they show everything and reflect the truth of what is happening, relating to the subject of ignorance from the first verse (34). This verse is also chosen to come after the chorus because of the tone shift; this verse is much more straightforward and literal than the first since it had shorter lines, instituting a candid voice, and less metaphors. With this development, the speaker inquires the authority figure if “all [their] plans/ were not worth the price” of the sacrifices others made for them to reach their objective (35-36). This question also is isolated in its own stanza to produce a greater impact and ensure that it evokes a sense of apprehension from the power figure.
