But, Jefferson did not commit these crimes. Over the course of the case his godmother, Miss Emma thought that Jefferson was stripped of his dignity, and wants him to sit in the chair with his dignity. So, she looks to the educated man Grant Wiggins to restore and build Jefferson's dignity. He takes up the task of doing so, but not without the help of fellow people within his community.
The theme in this novel is that you have to point out the wrong and take responsibility. I believe this is the theme because through the story majority of people brought up the conviction and they couldn’t do anything about it due to the race of their skin. For example the judge is white, the jury is white and one of the men(the most important of them all)

Between chapters 11-19 there was the barrier, in chapter 11 is where the ignorance of the barrier began as Jefferson was so blinded by being a ‘hog’ that he ate like one in front of Wiggins.He continued his ignorant ways until he and his silence until Grant bought him a radio. Yes he remained silent but it kept him distracted from the chair a little. But throughout the rest of the chapters they finally got a breakthrough when the actually talked about the chair. The theme and symbol go together because the symbol is the eyeopener for all and the key to the truth and the theme is the gate of the truth. The symbol has acted as both the elephant in the room but a barrier between brotherhood. It relates to me because it still is going on in my society but in different ways. This book was definitely an eye opener for me and this break down of the symbol has helped me understand the book even
