On October 17th, 1942 a man unlike any other was brought into this world. Jerome Stanley Sok demonstrated more strength, more bravery, and more love than we will ever know. Growing up, his family’s household was stern and disciplined but with love. His father returned from fighting in World War II, and his mother returned from working at the factory. Jerome admired his parents dedication to their work as well as to each other. He made it his goal to be like his father, to work hard and to love his children’s mother. On a chilly winter afternoon, Jerome’s father had a request for him to shovel the driveway. Jerome promised to do it later because he made plans with friends. Jerome returned home with his eyes fixed on the scene of his father shoveling the thick blanket of slushy snow off the driveway. The chapel was beautifully decorated with many elegant flower arrangements of all kinds. Coast Guardsmen lined the aisle way. I can still see them snapping the corners of the flag. After they folded it, they carefully placed it in Irene’s arms. These men didn’t even know Jerome, yet they treated everything with the utmost respect. It was a very sacred event. When it was all over, the heartache hit again. I couldn’t believe this is how it ended. Such a noble and honorable man gone. My friend - my exemplar - my grandfather taken. I do believe the good Lord had his reasons. Jerome was such a blessing and a virtuous man that the Lord probably needed him more than we did. I try to live my life in a way that he would be proud. I never knew that one person could have so much love, kindness, and virtue. Jerome Stanley Sok was a man of courage, love, and honor. Calvin Coolidge puts it the best way, “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave”.
