About fifty years ago, John F. Kennedy gave his famous inaugural address. He was our thirty-fifth president of the United States and was in office from January 20, 1961 until he was assassinated on November 22, 1963. This speech, said on the first day of his presidency, was one that people will remember forever and made a lasting impact on the citizens. By hearing his speech, it is evident that he was calling Americans to unite. He clearly alludes to the fact that the citizens of the United States play a big role in our nation. Kennedy states how we are to be as Americans. When analyzing this speech, rhetorical devices and rhetorical appeals are found to explain the roles we are to play as Americans.

Kennedy stated his metaphors, his intention was to compare two things and help the audience have a better understanding of the sentence. The two chiasmus he used by repeating the same few words twice in a speech can be used as a hook. In other words, those few words can grab the audience’s attention. The purpose of an anaphora is emphasis on a particular idea. For example, one role that Americans are to play is to ask what they can do for their country to make it an overall better nation. By repeating the phrase, ‘let both sides” John F. Kennedy is bringing attention and emphasis to what follows these words. The pathos appeal used was used to bring emotion to his speech. America is considered a wealthy and successful nation compared to other countries. When he mentions “people in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the binds of mass misery”, the audience is reminded of the privileges and opportunities it has. Kennedy makes the audience think of others who are struggling and alludes to another role Americans are to play which is to help others that are less fortunate than they are.
