Kennedy's challenge is to make people care about their nation not for selfish reasons but because it is the right thing to do. Through this Kennedy appears to be a man who cares not for party divisions but a man devoted and filled with pride for his nation and wishes to maintain the promise written in the declaration. His seamlessly unselfish and sincere tone reassures the audience about his genuine feelings towards the nation. Kennedy later shifts into a rather placate attitude as he addresses both foe and enemy alike.
Kennedy adopts the words “we,” “us.” “Fellow,” and “both” to develop a sense of closeness that makes it seem as if he was confining privately with a collective group of individuals rather than speaking to a public mass of people.
