Jim Crow Laws were laws concerning the segregation of whites and African Americans in the South. The laws started at the end of the Reconstruction in 1877. Jim Crow was originally a black character in a popular song composed in the 1830’s. “Jim Crow” appeared in sheet music written by Thomas Dartmouth “Daddy” Rice. Jim Crow laws were created to separate black and white people from even the slightest bit of contact.
Some of the Jim Crow laws were very strict. Black and white men could not work together in the same building, they had to work in separate buildings. Black people could not be addressed by “sir” or “ma’am” because it implied respect. Black people were being deprived of their rights. Black people couldn’t even make eye contact while speaking to white people. This implied friendship between a white person and a black person.
“To Kill a Mocking Bird” took place in the early 1930s, when the Great Depression and poverty and unemployment was the main issue. However, Jim Crow laws didn’t end until the 1960’s, so Jim Crow laws were taking place in “To Kill a Mocking Bird.” “To Kill a Mocking Bird” is set in Maycomb County, an imaginary district in southern Alabama. Jim Crow laws took place in the southern states of America. People who were of color in the story talked about how they couldn’t do many things because of the Jim Crow laws.
The original Jim Crow law was that blacks and whites were allowed to ride the same trains, but couldn’t sit next to each other. This law eventually went on to other transportation services, like busses and subways. Then more laws set out concerning the segregation of blacks and whites.
