It's been halfway through the novel and it still manages to keep me entertained with its vast collection of characters. The characters present in this novel are diverse in their points of view, very well developed, and in some cases difficult to connect with. Some of the main characters in the novel are listed below.
Jimmy/ Snowman: Jimmy who later changes his name to Snowman is the protagonist of the novel Oryx and Crake. From all the characters in the novel, he is the easiest one to connect with. Due to the lack of attention and nurturing provided by his parents, Jimmy develops a deep desire for emotional attention. His mother and rakunk leaving, leave Jimmy without someone to emotionally connect with other than his father who displays zero empathy abilities. Thus, causes further desire for attention. This lets the reader empathize with Jimmy and further understand his Jimmy’s views on life and why he acted the way he did towards his mother. Jimmy was so desperate for attention that he use to annoy his mother in order “to create an effect” (33, Atwood) as he loved getting a reaction out of her. From the

Atwood includes these characters to develop a backstory. It is with the help of these characters that Jimmy’s childhood is explained. They move the plot along. Without knowing the way Jimmy’s parents treated him, the reader would not have been able to understand why he acted the way he did. They would not have connected so easily with Jimmy and his views. Jimmy’s mother is against the whole biological advancement, therefore she quits her job and stays home to nurture him. Since she is mostly in the state of depression, she cannot provide him enough attention. On the other hand is Jimmy’s father who is an enthusiastic supporter of biological advancements and therefore he acts like the rest of the society, not displaying his emotions, therefore, leaving Jimmy vying for
