I never realized how dreadful marching could be. We had to march a long trail from Fort Leavenworth to Springfield, Missouri. We had been informed that there was 5,000 Kansas volunteers and 10,000 soldiers in the south. The Union had to fight for missouri or else it would fall to the south. There was this officer named Pete Milholland who I had noticed was studying on how to become a better shooter. I Personally don't like officers, especially since Pete didn't dress like one. Me and nature weren't quite getting along while marching. It was hot while marching, which made everybody sweat and made the march so much harder. The boy looked like a young child, and I felt the urge to help him. I taught him to put dry grass in his hat and pour water over it to stay cool. The army was officially in Missouri. I had lice and those little rascals made me itch. I was scratching while marching, and wde usually marched 20-25 miles a day. While some of the soldiers were swimming in stream, I saw Jimmy shaving his face. A sergeant had seen him, and learned that jimmy was only fourteen years old. Jimmy was going to get sent home because he was so young. I don't believe I'm ever going to get along with Captain Clardy. While cleaning my gun, I like to fire a shot to make it easier. I guess soldiers are supposed to sk when to fire a gun, so Captain Clardy punished me. I was on all night sentry duty. I grew very tired while on duty, so I went to the cooks mess to get some coffee. While I was there, I heard Sparrow, a cook, talk in his sleep. Sparrow was extremely drunk, and he had said something that gave me goosebumps all around my body. I had just learned that Captain Clardy had killed a widow in his town to steal her money. I was silent. The next day I had learned that Jimmy didn't get sent home. He turned into a
