All around the world people know the story of Harry Potter and the phenomenal success that the book series has had, but not everyone knows much about the woman who created the fantasy world. Joanne Rowling started planning her first book in 1990, on a train going back home from London, which took a tumultuous seven years of work before it was published. She faced many hardships over this time including the loss of her mother, divorce from her first husband and living in poverty while trying to raise her young daughter. Today the Harry Potter series has sold over 400 million copies world-wide and is the best-selling book series in history, not to mention the movies and countless products that this series has created including its own theme park.
J.K. Rowling had a complete life change as her series took off in the late 1990’s, and within five years she went from living on government assistance to being a millionaire hundreds of times over. Through all of this J.K. Rowling has remained true to herself, and has not let her public influence and celebrity get the better of her. When she was named Time magazine runner up for person of the year in 2007, not only was her literary work celebrated, but her political, social and moral accomplishments, along with her inspiring nature to her many fans.
