When workers are unemployed, it critically affects their families, themselves, and America. The workers can’t provide much-needed wages for their families and The United States unemployment rate increases. Unemployment is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as people who do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work (Amadeo, 2017). As of January 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the unemployment rate is 4.1 percent (Bureau of Labor of Statistics, n.d.). There are 6.7 million people in America that are unemployed. Which brings up an intriguing question? Why is the United States experiencing a decrease in joblessness, while simultaneously experiencing a stagnant employment rate?

One reason is political uncertainty in Washington under the current administration. Economists believe that companies might be holding off hiring amid worries, and political scandals engulfing President Donald Trump could imperil his economic agenda, including tax cuts and infrastructure spending (Mulikani, 2017). In my opinion, the current administration is unreliable and not stable. Every week there is another scandal, firing, or mishap. The current chaotic state of President Trump’s administration is creating a rippling effect on the American economy. Which in turn delays or holds off on hiring needed American employees. Another reason is the lack of labor unions in America. American companies have a bitter disdain for labor unions. Instead of hiring American workers under union contracts companies moved jobs to the Philippines,
