It takes many parts of a formula to win a war. Each piece unique but indispensable. During the American Revolution each formula piece was obtained by the Continental Army, guaranteeing their victory over the superior British forces. However, all of the formula pieces were attained only through the valiant efforts of spies and spy rings operating under George Washington’s command during the revolution. The Americans, despite overwhelming odds against them, managed to keep morale of the troops and the civilians of the troops they were fighting for, high. This was consummated by the use of propaganda and victory during a strategic moment in time. It was through spies alone that the victories of the two most salient battles of the war fell to the side of the rebels. The battles of Yorktown and Saratoga determined the outcome of the war. On a broad basis the information gathered by spies helped complete another vital piece of the formula to win the war. More effective than the British, American spies discovered the greatest betrayal of the war, assassination attempts on George Washington’s life, and essential information on the movement of enemy troops. All of which, had they not been discovered, could have jeopardized the Continental’s chances at winning the revolution. Lastly, by utilizing individuals like Benjamin Franklin and Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, the aid of
