INTRODUCTION
John Anthony Walker Jr. was born July 28, 1937, in Washington DC. His mother was an Italian-American and his father was a Warner Brother’s film marketer. His father was also a raging alcoholic who could turn violent, which led to a disturbing childhood for John and his two brothers. John’s father beat his mother so badly that he would plot to murder his father as a young child. Growing up, John was not a good student nor was he good at sports, but he had a strong desire to succeed. He attended Catholic school and worked two jobs as a young teen until he saved enough to buy a car. Meanwhile, his father continued to drink and lost his job. Bankrupt, the family moved from Washington DC to Scranton, Pennsylvania to be closer to the boy’s grandparents. When John was 17, he was arrested for attempted burglary. He admitted to six other burglaries during questioning, and was sentenced to probation. His older brother, Arthur J. Walker, who was already in the Navy, convinced the judge to allow Walker to avoid punishment by joining the Navy. Arthur felt that getting away from home plus the discipline of the Navy would help John get his act together.
