Psychologist John Bowlby was first theorist to discover attachment theory. This theory focuses on the relationships and ties between individuals, more specifically on long lasting relationships of parents and children and romantic couples (Cassidy, 1999). Bowlby believes that children establish attachment towards authority figures in their lives in order to have a sense control, structure and protection (Bretherton, 1999). From these figures in their lives children learn to rely upon others for certain needs but also distinguish what they must learn to fend for themselves and ultimately create self-soothing strategies and coping skills. Denise’s attachment comes from her relationships with her mother and grandmother. These two women served as role models and shelter for her while she developed. Their tight knit bond between the three of them created a place for Denise to grow without worry and constant love and support. To add, once she divorced both offered her and Sarah to come and live with whoever until she was able to move out on her own but she declined. Is not that she did not want to move in with either of them but because she wanted to be independent and take care for her own. One strong point in applying Bowlby’s Attachment Theory is that it holds a lot of validity across educational leaders and scholarly boards based upon on previous research (Walters, 2000). Bowlby’s work is based upon Freud’s theories, therefore when making connections to individuals it becomes legitimate. In addition, the theory explains development in social relationships. For example, one can understand that the way Denise was raised by both her mother and grandmother played a key role into building that good of a relationship amongst them.
