Through the early and middle 1800s, there lived a man by the name of John Brown who is known to be a hero of the North, but a villain to the South by the actions he took before the Civil War occurred. His final raid, which was a failure known as the raid on Harper's Ferry, attacked the Southerners in an attempt to free slaves and take down the South. Choosing violence over peace, the decisions he made were very impactful overall and the tactics he used caused him to be seen in two different lights. He took such actions against the Southern slave owners all for one goal: to end slavery, which was a great sin to the world in his eyes.

John Brown was born May 9, 1800 as the forth or middle child of what would later grow to a family of eight born from two extremely religious parents. Through his parents, John and his many siblings were taught to fear God and his commandments, and that sinning was one of the worst possible things they could ever do. That being said, the children were given punishment if they had committed a sin, that punishment being beatings. His childhood and how he was raised was very difficult, yet it brought him up and impacted him to dislike slavery and gave him his goal, which was to eliminate slavery. He took drastic measures and chose the path of violence as a way of dealing with the situation, since negotiating peacefully seemed to do little to no impact on either the Northerners or Southerners over their battle of slavery. As previously stated, this topic is of great importance because of how much of an impact is has made in the United States, and if he had not carried through with his actions, this country could be very different than how it is
