Identification 1 (John Brown) John Brown was born on May 9, 1800 in Torrington, Connecticut. Brown was most famously known for being a radical white abolitionist and for his famous raid on Harpers Ferry. His raid on Harpers Ferry occurred on October 16, 1859. On that date he led eighteen men to Harpers Ferry armory. The reason why he raided the armory was to take the weapons from the armory give them to the slaves of the county and start a large scale slave revolt and forcibly end slavery. Unfortunately, the raid was stopped and Brown was captured and executed. (The Abolitionists. Dir. Rob Rapley. Perf. Richard Brooks. WGBH, 2013. DVD.)
