Throughout this year in AP English we as a class went through several different essays that included different topics. All these essays were meaningful and educational in their own way which allowed the reader to view each topic in a new lens. Which therefore informed the reader more about a specific debate and allowed for a much better and clearer understanding. Two essays that did this was “I Know Why the Caged Brid Cannot Read” by Francine Prose which deals with Education and “The Dependence Effect” by John Kenneth Galbraith which deals with the economy. These contemporary and classic essays demonstrate the true goal of literature which is to challenge the ideals of society.
In the essay “I Know Why the Caged Brid Cannot Read” Prose is trying to convey one thing to the audience and that is current school education is very weak. Her message is meaningful in the way where she is looking for a change. She even gives a list of books that she handpicked herself that can make very educational for the students. Galbraith talks about how the USA is mass product producer and how big corporations use this to their advantage. He states “The higher level of production has, merely, a higher level of want creation necessitating a higher level of want satisfaction.” This quote shows the validity and meaning of his message how corporations are depending on the people buying things to create a “higher level of want of satisfaction” the more the product is out there the more we need it, the more we want it.
