John Henry Hammond was a true rags to riches story. A prime example of a man driven by ambition and desire. He was a product of his environment as he was drilled by his late father to accomplish everything he could in life because money, social status, and political ranking were all that mattered to such a ruthless man. John Henry Hammond was well educated at the esteemed South Carolina College, he was a gifted writer, and lawyer with intense drive and perseverance when it came to his goals in life. As a young man in college he was very popular and well esteemed by his peers, he thrived in the social aspects of his life in Columbia, but felt out of place anywhere his friends were not. John became a lawyer and soon after his career did not take off as he planned he became a newspaper editor for a political tabloid leading its readers to a “full confession of our political faith” .

Hammond goes through a series of economic crisis where he must develop his abilities of agricultural progressions or lose the funding of his plantation for his political ambitions. To Hammond’s surprise, and with the support of the Unionist and the Nullifiers, he is elected governor at the 1842 meeting of the legislature. Subsequently a series of scandals surrounding the seduction of his four nieces bring Hammond to recognize his personal and political lives would clash in unfortunate light. He knew the retribution of his brother in law Wade Hampton was imminent, however he was not sure when or how the attack would emanate to fruition.
