When choosing a legendary figure, John Henry is an under chosen character within others such as Paul Bunyan or Black Beard. There are many reasons why John Henry is a formidable foe to these other legends. Many people think of John Henry as the “steel-driving man” who did astonishing things throughout his shortened life. Most others overlook his background and story. John Henry was an African American who was freed from slavery and then went to find work to support himself and his family. He was a strong, fast and hard working individual who should not be overlooked. John Henry was a real historical figure, but also and inspiring tale told to help and enlighten many people in his time and even today.

“John Henry was the fastest, strongest, and most powerful man working on the trails.” (“The Man - Facts, Fictions, and Themes”). It took a man with talents such as John Henry to perform these deeds. He was truly an elite worker during his time. “John Henry defeated an Irishman to become the camp’s steel-driving champion.” (“John Henry: A West Virginian Hero”). John Henry joined the camp and started working. Soon after that he has defeated the champion of the camp. Beating the champion soon after joining is something little could prosper. “John Henry was the working man's champions contestants to defend the pride and livelihood of his co-workers.” (“John Henry and the Coming of the Railroad”). John Henry was working hard to achieve his dream. He was going to help his co-workers. John Henry ultimately performed tasks that were extraordinary.
Overall John Henry is an amazing tale who inspired people and did incredible tasks, even though he faced adversity. Although just mainly just a legend, it proves that it is important in history. John Henry has helped countless generations. He has brought hope when there was none. John Henry inspired people to become better human
