Born on February 21, 1940, John Robert Lewis is a prominent civil rights leader and a U.S. Democratic Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district. Lewis, who as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was one of the "Big Six" leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis played many key roles in the Civil Rights Movement that led to the legalized end of racial segregation in the United States. Lewis has since been awarded many honorary degrees and numerous awards from eminent national and international institutions, including the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Beginning with Book One of March, John Lewis re-tells the story of his life journey while growing up. One eye opening event for John Lewis in his teen years was when he went to stay with family who lived in the north. Lewis could see how good life could be if the world was not segregated. His Aunt and Uncle lived in a house between two white neighbors, they went to places he could never imagine; candy counter, department stores, etc. When John Lewis’s trip came to an end, he knew what he wanted to make the world a better place.
