The day of October 23, 1942 was a day to remember. For this was the day that the multi-talented hardworking John Michael Crichton was born. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and when he was still very young he moved to Long Island, New York. His father was a journalist and he says that he has his own broad knowledge from his father's wide interests. When he was still little he was constantly ill. This led him to spend much time indoors and play with electric cars and perform science experiments. As he became 10 years old he began to write. When he was fourteen he was already writing and selling articles to the New York Times. Since they were still in school getting their degrees, Michael Crichton decided to have a part time job as a writer to make money to pay their rent. After he got his degree in medical school he decided to drop out of school and go back to one of his previous joys, writing. His first life changing novel was named the Andromeda Strain. The success of this book eliminated any lingering doubts Michael had about being a writer. Many critics noted that the characters were bland and generic and that the reader never got to know them and developed no sympathy for them. The Andromeda strain was an instant success 3 million copies were sold and Universal Studios Hollywood almost immediately bought filming rights for the Andromeda Strain. Soon after it started to become extremely difficult for him to write. Crichton tried again to write and direct a quality motion picture film. “Film critic Janet Maslin of the New York Times weighs in a familiar criticism, that Crichton had a much better feel for the films gadgets than for it’s human players.” Crichton hit the bottom, and seemed like he lost his touch of as a screenwriter and a director.
