John Proctor is a tragic hero. He is the main character in The Crucible. In this story people are being accused of witchcraft in Salem. He is a tragic hero because he died defending his honor, sticks to his beliefs, and confesses the truth. John Proctor died for not confessing because he did not want to sacrifice the other’s reputations. The others would not confess about witchcraft. “They think to go like saints. I like not to spoil their names”, said John Proctor. John does not believe in witchcraft. He always sticks to his beliefs and doesn’t just believe in witchcraft because everyone else does. Mr. Proctor sacrificed his life for his sins of weakness. He refused to save his life by confessing and naming names. At first he said yes and agreed but he only did that to please Elizabeth. John said, “I will have my life.” His soul was already tortured because of his affair with Abigail. He wants a good name and dignity back.
