Miller’s use of dialogue to show the rift between John and Elizabeth by showing their lack of interaction. An example of this would be when John Proctor asks, “Are you well today?” (50), and Goody Proctor simply replied with, “I am” (50). When the two interact with each other, there isn't much natural conversation going on. There is an awkward tension between the couple which suggests that the revelation of John Proctor’s act of adultery is still fresh. Miller produces the awkwardness between the Proctors by making their statements and replies seem forced.
