In The Crucible, John Proctor was one hot mess. He had been through so much, and was perceived in so many different ways. He started off with an atrocious reputation because he cheated on his wife, but that is not him. He is an honest man, and a hard worker, and changed himself for his reputation. He is a tragic hero in the play, and is a strong example of character development. John Proctor’s changes were prompted because he realized his mistake of cheating on his wife, and realized he wanted to be remembered as a hero, not a flawed man.
When Proctor first cheated on his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, he did not think it would be the commotion it turned out to be, but it was. And throughout the play Proctor realized his mistakes, and understood

After all of his ups and downs, and all of his changes. No matter what people think of him, or how he is perceived, he is not a bad man. By the end of the play, Proctor restores his honor, and family name. By being chosen to be hanged, and not signing up for the confessional he gets his positive name and legacy back. Proctor just wanted to be remembered as a good man, and he did that by telling the truth and being hanged (Miller 1231). He may have had to die for it, but he was brave and showed what he truly stood for. “I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor” (Miller 1231). By the end of the play, people are coming around for Proctor. The people of Salem were realizing he was just a flawed human, not evil. He obtained what he wanted, and restored is reputation, and is remembered as a tragic hero.
In The Crucible, Salem was greatly affected. Friends were turning on friends, family was turning on family, with no hope for Salem because everyone was blaming everyone of witchcraft, when the witchcraft wasn’t even real! Then, John Proctor came to the rescue, and saved Salem. He didn’t just save Salem, Salem saved him. He got what he wanted, and changed for the better.
