During the Salem Witch Trials, vengeance was working it’s way through the village. When John Proctor started the affair with Reverend Parris’s niece Abigail Williams. She would do anything to be with John, even if it meant killing other people in the village to get to his wife Elizabeth. In the beginning, we knew that John was having an affair with Abigail. She wanted to be with John even after he called it off. The trials started and several people were accused of witchcraft. The governor had sent out a warrant for Martha Corey, Rebecca Nurse, and Elizabeth Proctor. John’s servant Mary Warren had warned them about Elizabeth’s name being accused in court. She wanted to run out of the court, but she then accuses Mary in open court. Abigail and the other girls see her spirit as a yellow bird. They want her to be accused because she went against what Abigail wanted. Mary then turns on John accusing him of being the devil. He wanted to keep his property and his family together. Reverend Parris received a death threat from the people in town. They didn’t want a member of their society to be hung when everyone knew that the girls were faking. Giles Corey was pressed to death because he wouldn’t give the name of the man who accused Mr. Putnam of killing off his neighbors to receive their land. As he died, Giles only told them to add more weight. Abigail stole money from her uncle's strong box and left Salem. John got to talk to Elizabeth and he wanted her to live even if that meant he had to hang for his sins. John ripped up his confession because he did not want it to hang on the doors of the town's church. John Proctor saw that the only crime in Salem was vengeance.
